Preservation of Academic Motivation: Remaining Constant in the Long Term.
There is the need to maintain academic motivation since learning is not a short term endeavor but a long-term undertaking that cannot be accomplished via a given short period of time. Most students start their academic experience with a lot of energy and optimism but as time progresses, exercise and homework, tests and fines and duties may lower mood. Motivation automatically increases and decreases with respect to the level of stress, personal situations, psychological state and confidence. Students will not be able to work consistently and reliably because they depend solely on motivation. Creation of systems, routine, and internal discipline is beneficial to enable the students to remain consistent even when there is low or no motivation.
Motivation is much stronger when one comprehends personal reasons why he/she is studying. Career ambitions and personal growth drive some students, and the urge to support the family or attain independence drives others. Studies can also be meaningful when students know why they are doing it and not enforced. Emotional connection can be made to learning through meaning and more persistence is brought about by emotional connection. When students know the reason why they are learning, they tend to have more persistence even when they get to work hard or get bored.
Avoiding burnout and discouragement is achieved through setting realistic and attainable goals. Too big or general goals may be daunting and unattainable. Goals are easily achievable and less threatening when they are divided into small and well-set objectives. The attainment of little objectives works as a confidence booster and generates momentum. Trust motivates the person to put more effort and it makes the person less afraid of failure.
Subdivision of long-term objectives into short-term ones allows students to understand the progress better. Students will be able to concentrate on weekly goals or daily activities, rather than concentrating only on the final exams or the graduation. Observable improvement leads to deferred frustration and satisfaction. Having a sense of improvement builds the faith in the success.
Monitoring helps to promote diligence and discipline. The record of work is visible when writing down tasks and assignments completed, time spent studying. This history gives evidence that it is working despite instances when it seems slow. When students are in discouraging situations, looking back through progress helps them to remember the progress they have made. Motivation is restored through this reminder.
Establishing a timetable that is balanced helps in maintaining motivation. The constant study without a break causes burnout, exhaustion, and frustration. The balanced schedule has time to study, rest, physical activities, socializing and relaxation. Balance safeguards the mental energy and emotions. Being around the supportive individuals enhances the motivation. Positive influence is created by friends who cherish education. Peers who are supportive are helpful and encouraging, give reminders, and hold one accountable. Influence of the social environment on effort is more than what some students can understand.
Relating the learning to real-life gains significance. The more the subjects are understood with regards to future careers or personal development, the more it becomes engaging. Relevance causes studying to be meaningful, as opposed to meaningless.
Embracing bad days discourages giving up. All people have unproductive days. It is important to keep moving on with things rather than surrender. It is not about perfection, but rather uniformity.
It is important to celebrate minor achievements to support the work. The understanding of the progress creates motivation. Motivation helps in spurring action.
