Developing Good Study Skills: Developing a Learning Habit.
One of the greatest pillars of student productivity is to create good study habits since they influence the process of learning on a day-to-day basis and not just on examination days. The students are highly dependent on motivation to start the studying process yet the motivation is variable in nature and fluctuates with mood, energy level, stress and distractions. Students who rely on motivation tend to put off the studying process until the time when deadlines put them under severe pressure. Habits also enable one to maintain consistency of working even when the motivation is minimal so that when the student is not in an inspirational state they still work continuously rather than waiting till they are inspired.
Regular practice in learning helps to minimize decision fatigue, or the mental fatigue of having to make too many decisions in a single day. When students have the knowledge of when they will be studying, where they will be studying and what they will be working on they do not use mental energy on arguing over these issues. Such an arrangement brings out predictability and reduce anxiety. Gradually, studying becomes the ordinary aspect of the everyday life instead of something stressful that seems to drag and overwhelm every moment.
It is crucial to learn the personal energy patterns to develop effective study habits. Not all students work best in the morning but some students work better in the afternoon or the evening. Listening to these natural rhythms enables the students to plan the heavy subjects during the days when their energy levels are high and the light ones during the low-energy days. Training the brain to perceive space as an area of focus happens by studying in the same place on a regular basis. The research field does not require being flawless or costly. Long hours of studying without taking a break cause mental exhaustion and deterioration. Breaks enable the brain to rest and get information processed. Alternation between work and rest enhances endurance.
Measuring progress boosts habits through rendering improvement visible. Students are motivated when they observe things that are already done, chapters that have already been finished, or increasing scores in practice. Tracking of progress reveals that things are improving despite the slow pace of improvement. This feeling of evolution spurs on.
Good study habits are not attained in a single day. Students usually fail when they want to transform everything simultaneously. Habits are easier to keep when one begins with small manageable changes. Minor achievements bring in confidence and momentum.
Developing good study habits is not perfection. There will be days which are unproductive. It is important to resume normalcy rather than to give up. Consistency brings discipline over time and with discipline there is academic improvement in the long run.
