Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to play some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose most times. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access a few of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
